Sheffield Beach and Christmas Bay: A Local's Guide
by I Love Ballito Writer · · 4 min read
Sheffield Beach is where the North Coast goes quiet. About nine kilometres north of Ballito, 10 to 15 minutes by car outside peak hours, it is a small beachfront village with rock pools instead of a promenade and no shops on the sand. People come here to snorkel, fish, walk the dog and have a stretch of the Indian Ocean more or less to themselves.
Getting there
Take the N2 north to exit 214, turn onto Salt Rock Road and then onto Sheffield Beach Road. King Shaka International Airport is about half an hour away on the N2.
A new N2 interchange for Sheffield has been under construction since April 2025. Check whether it has opened before you rely on it. It will have south-facing ramps only, for traffic to and from Ballito and Durban.
Sheffield Beach
The beach is small and rocky, a run of sheltered coves and rock pools. It is at its best at low tide, when the pools are full of things for children to find. It is also known for snorkelling, fishing and diving.
There are no lifeguards here and no shark safety gear. If you want to swim in the surf, go to Salt Rock Main Beach, a few minutes south.
People walk their dogs here, and the North Coast Courier has listed it among the area's dog-friendly beaches. We found no municipal rule either way, so keep a lead with you.

Christmas Bay
Christmas Bay is the northernmost beach, a long sandy stretch with few facilities and no lifeguards. That is the appeal. Seaton and Zululami estates both have direct access to it. The coast north of here is undeveloped and unguarded, and the uMhlali River mouth lies between the bay and Tinley Manor, so do not treat it as a stroll to the next village.
Parking is limited, so arrive early on a weekend or in season.

Where to eat
There is nothing to eat on the beach itself, so bring what you need. The nearest stop is The Grand Cafe at The Grand Exotic, on Sheffield Beach Road, for coffee and light meals. It is open during the day from Tuesday to Sunday. For a proper meal, Tiffany's Shopping Centre and the Sage Centre are a short drive away. Our Salt Rock guide lists what is there.
Things to do
Flag Animal Farm
The family outing on this side of the N2. There are shows through the day, at 11:00, 12:30 (milking), 14:00 (reptiles) and 15:30, plus pony and tractor rides, a mini dinosaur park, indoor play and a water park that opens on weekends and holidays. Entry was R82 for adults and R70 for children when we checked in October 2026. Rides and the water park cost extra.
Rock pools, snorkelling and fishing
Low tide is the time for all three. Wear shoes on the rocks. You need a recreational fishing permit for all of it: rod and line angling, spearfishing, and collecting crayfish, mussels or oysters.
Dolphins and whales
Dolphins pass all year. Whales are seen in winter and spring.
Who lives here
Sheffield is an older beachfront village with a ring of newer gated estates behind it on former sugarcane land: Brettenwood, Seaton, Elaleni, Zululami and Sheffield Manor. Residents do their shopping in Salt Rock, at Tiffany's and the New Salt Rock Shopping Centre.
Good to know
- No lifeguards and no shark safety gear at Sheffield Beach or Christmas Bay. Swim with care, and use Salt Rock Main Beach for surf swimming.
- No shops at the beach. Bring water and shade.
- Do not leave valuables in the car.
A note on Tinley Manor
Tinley Manor is the next village up the coast, on the north bank of the uMhlali River mouth. The river mouth separates it from Christmas Bay, and by road it is a separate trip through N2 exit 222. Club Med opened there on 4 July 2026, and its beach holds Blue Flag status for 2026/27. Our beach guide has more on it.
